The Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office has released a list of a dozen charges that could be brought against Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov, ranging from complicity in drug dealing and money laundering, to facilitating the distribution of child pornography.
The 39-year-old Russian, who also holds citizenship in France, the UAE, and St. Kitts and Nevis, was detained by French authorities on Saturday after arriving in Paris from Azerbaijan by private jet.
In a statement on Sunday, Telegram called it “absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform.” Telegram complies with local laws, including the EU’s Digital Rights Act (DSA) and anti-Russian sanctions, the company added.
Notice what is being said here and what is being implied here. It is beyond sinister and will affect all of us that use such platforms as part of alt media open source intelligence gathering. What they are saying is that the platforms are now responsible for the policing of their users and that the users themselves by even using these platforms are also by association guilty of these ridiculous charges.
Notice also that only selected platforms will receive such treatment. Yulia Vavilova, who accompanied Telegram founder Pavel Durov to France, has been detained by local police along with the Russian entrepreneur, according to several media reports.
Vavilova, who describes herself as a crypto coach and a streamer from Dubai, has been spotted with Durov on multiple occasions and was on the private jet with him when they landed in Paris, media outlets have claimed.
